Just a few hours away are some worthwhile places to visit on a rest day :
Franklin Mountain State Park - many hiking trails here, dogs welcome. The Texas State Park Pass gets you in free.
White Sands National Monument
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
Carlsbad Caverns
Truth or Consequences Hot Springs - we recommend Riverbend Hot Springs, but there's also many other resort/spa type options as well. The Elephant Butte State Park is just a few miles from TorC.
Hueco Tanks - don't want to go too far? the park also offers guided Rock Art Tours
FOOD:
Restaurants
There are many restaurants in El Paso, but these are some of the favorite among climbers:
Cattleman's Steakhouse - Ask for the Coyote room for a chance to see coyotes
Carlos & Mickey's
Crave
Sabertooth
El Taco Tote
El Pasito
Eating in
Vista Mercado - closest grocer to the Hueco Tanks. 14700 Montana Ave
SPROUTS - located @ Zaragoza/Montwood (organic and vegan choices)
MEXICO:
COVID RESTRICTIONS may not allow visitors at this time.
A trip over the border used to be very common as a rest day activity, however due to the recent problems in Juarez, tourism has declined over the past few years. We've recently visited there last year and the locals claim it is safe once again. If you plan to visit, it's best to park on the "American" side and walk over. Bring a passport and money to get back across. Travel only in the day and in groups and carry your money inconspicuously.
